1750 dead birds were recovered, but the estimated number of affected birds is tenfold. The oil accident had an immediate and lethal effect on all birds caught up in the oil.
Incident background information: 

The Baltic Carrier collided with the freighter Tern in international waters of the Baltic Sea between Denmark and Germany. It is considered to be the worst case of oil pollution in Danish coastal waters to date.
