Reducing the Impact of Oil Spills (RIOS)

The main objective of RIOS was the development of an action plan for future research in the area of oiled wildlife rehabilitation and to stimulate the contacts and future co-operation between scientists, wildlife responders, oil industry and governmental organisations. To set the scene for the project, the project’s expert firstly identified state-of-the-art in the field of oiled wildlife response and defined initial research priorities in a background document.

A workshop was organised in Algarve, Portugal in April 2008, bringing together scientists to discuss the background document and research concerning oil spills and their effects on wildlife. The workshop offered the unique opportunity for individuals and organisations actively involved in the field of oiled wildlife response and rehabilitation to contribute to the identification of research priorities. The identified research priorities formed the basis of the European Action Plan, which was submitted to the European Commission and may be used in the development of European research policy.
